Packers Offseason Notes: 2014 Edition
The Packers 2014 offseason began after the loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card matchup at Lambeau Field. This blog post will be updated to note the Packers offseason moves as they become available.

The Packers have made the resigning of quarterback Matt Flynn official. Flynn and the Packers agreed to a 1-year deal worth a max of $1.07 million. Contract details are the following: $730,000 (base salary), $75,000 (signing bonus), $25,000 (workout bonus), $138,125 (roster bonus), and $100,000 (incentives). Flynn returns to Green Bay to be the full-time backup quarterback to Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers have announced they have resigned fullback John Kuhn to a 1-year deal. The contract is worth just over $1 million with a base salary of $855,000. Kuhn is certainly one of the most popular players on the Green Bay Packers. The chants of "KUUUUHN" will live on at Lambeau Field!

The Oakland Raiders have signed former Packers defensive end C.J. Wilson. Wilson played the last four seasons with the Packers. Wilson's best season came in 2012 when he record 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

The Cincinnati Bengals have announced they have signed former Packers offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse. Newhouse started 31 games over the last four seasons with the Packers.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora has reported the Packers have re-signed running back James Starks to a 2-year contract. Starks is coming off a very successful season and a mostly healthy one in fact. Starks was scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers tomorrow, but Starks has agreed to return to the Packers. The one-two punch of Eddie Lacy and James Starks is something to be excited about next year.
ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported the Oakland Raiders has signed now former Packers wide receiver James Jones to a 3-year contract worth $11.3 million. Drafted in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft, Jones had an exceptional career with the Green Bay Packers. Jones' best season was in 2012, when he lead the NFL in receiving touchdowns with 14. James Jones was a true professional. It was a pleasure having him on this team. He will be missed on the field, in the locker room, and off the field.

The Packers have signed another free agent from inside the NFC North. Former Minnesota Vikings defensive linemen Letroy Guion and the Packers have agreed on a 1-year contract reportedly worth $730,000 including a $1000,000 signing bonus. Guion, released by the Vikings, recored 21 tackles and one sack (against the Packers) last season.

In a shocker, ESPN's Josina Anderson has reported former Chicago Bears defensive end Julius Peppers has signed with the Packers. Peppers signed a 3-year deal worth a maximum of $30 million. At 34, Peppers has recorded 1181/2 sacks in twelve seasons. Peppers is coming off one of his worst seasons, but believes he still have a lot in the tank and a lot to prove. Peppers will only account for $3.5 million towards the salary cap this next season. Seems like an absolute steal for one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. Peppers will play along side Clay Matthews at multiple positions. This seems to be the beginning of the different schemes the Packers will play on defense next year (hybrid defense).
The amazing part about this signing was how unexpected this deal was. It is amazing how the Packers talked to Peppers, brought him to Green Bay, and signed him without anyone saying a word.

NFL Network has reported the Packers and B.J. Raji have a deal in place to keep the defensive lineman in Green Bay one more year. Raji has signed 1-year 'prove it' deal worth $4 million after Raji received little interest in the free agent market. Raji has really struggled since the Super Bowl season in 2010. The Packers were prepared to let Raji walk in free agency unless the price was right. Well, the price was right. Let's see if Raji puts together a good year to improve his free agency value next offseason.
NFL Network has reported the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed now former Packers starting center Evan Dietrich-Smith to a 4-year $14.25 million contract. Dietrich-Smith started all 16 games last season and has 25 career starts at center. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers will begin next season with their fourth different center in four years.

The Packers have announced they have re-signed tight end Andrew Quarless to a 2-year, $3 million deal with a $350,000 bonus. Quarless is the third player the Packers have re-signed since the start of free agancy.

According to Mike Neal, he has signed a 2-year deal to remain in Green Bay. Neal, an outside linebacker/defensive end, when healthy, has been an effective player on the defensive side of the ball. Neal played in all 16 games last season and was a key contributor to the pass rush. Neal's contract is a 2-year deal for $8 million including a $2.5 million signing bonus.
The Chicago Bears have signed now former Packers safety M.D. Jennings to a 1-year contract. Jennings' time in Green Bay will best be known for his role in 'FailMary.' With all due respect to Jennings, losing him may improve the Packers defense with the fact that we will have someone else playing next to Morgan Burnett for Week 1. His addition to the Bears defense can only be good news for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense.

Pro Football Talk and ESPN's Adam Schefter have confirmed the Packers have re-signed cornerback Sam Shields to a 4-year deal worth $39 million including a $12.5 million signing bonus. The deal comes just before Shields was set to hit the open market of free agency.
If the Packers had to rank their free agents to re-sign this offseason, Sam Shields would probably be number one of that list. At 26 and in the prime of his career, Shields has plenty of upside. From an undrafted free agent, to two interceptions in the 2010 NFC Championship game, to a big pay day.

The Packers have announced several coaching moves to sure up their coaching staff. Winston Moss, who coached the inside linebackers, will coach all linebackers next season. Moss takes over the players coached by the recently departed Kevin Greene. Moss, who is also the Packers assistant head coach, is entering his eighth season as a member of the Packers coaching staff. Sam Gash has been hired as the Packers running backs coach to replace Alex Van Pelt who was promoted to quarterbacks coach. Gash spent the last five seasons as the running backs coach for the Detroit Lions.
The Packers have also hired former University of Illinois and University of Florida head coach Ron Zook as an assistant special teams coach. Zook served as the head coach at Illinois from 2005-2011. Zook has experience with special teams as he coached special teams for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1990's. Head coach Mike McCarthy also has familiarity with Ron Zook as they were both members of the New Orleans Saints' coaching staff in 2000 and 2001.

Aaron Rodgers 48-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb on fourth and 8 with :38 seconds left in the game to defeat the Chicago Bears and clinch the 2013 NFC North title has won the NFL's Never Say Never Moment of the Year. The award was announced at the 3rd annual NFL Honors.
This was one of the most exciting plays of the entire season. With the season on the line, and returning for injuries, heroic efforts by Rodgers and Cobb saved the Packers season and booked their ticket to the postseason.

Eddie Lacy has been announced as the 2013 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year at the 3rd annual NFL Honors. The Packers 2013 second round draft pick from Alabama joins John Brockington as the only two players in Packers history to earn this honor. Lacy received 35 of 50 first place votes.
Lacy rushed for 1,178 yards on 284 carries averaging 4.2 yards a carry including four games with at least 100 yards rushing. Lacy also added 11 rushing touchdowns on the season. Lacy also received some in-season honors. He was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month in October along with the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys.
This is a well deserved honor for Eddie Lacy. Lacy rejuvenated the Packers running game that had been missing for years. Lacy has a bright future in the NFL and as a member of the 'Green & Gold.'

CBSSports.com has reported the Packers have promoted Alex Van Pelt to be the next quarterbacks coach. Van Pelt spent the last two seasons as the Packers running backs coach. Prior to joining the Packers in 2012, Van Pelt coached quarterbacks with the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Van Pelt also spent a season as the Bills offensive coordinator.
Van Pelt has hands on experience with quarterbacks as he was a four year starting quarterback at the University of Pittsburgh. At one time, Van Pelt held the single season mark for most passing yards (3,163), which once belonged to Dan Marino. Van Pelt also played eleven years in the NFL with the Steelers, Chiefs, and Bills.
Van Pelt will replace Ben McAdoo who was hired by the New York Giants as their offensive coordinator.

The Packers announced today that Kevin Greene will step down as outside linebackers coach. Greene held the role as the Packers outside linebackers coach for the past five seasons. This will be a tremendous loss for the Packers losing Greene's fire and passion on the sideline. Greene is most famous for his 'It. Is. Time.' quote to Clay Matthews in Super Bowl 45. Greene cited his desire to spend more time with his family. "I am stepping away from the NFL at this time in order to spend more time with my wife, Tara, and our children, Gavin and Gabrielle. I will miss coaching and will try to return after our kids move on to college if a team will have me."
Greene also expressed his extreme gratitude towards the Green Bay Packers, Mike McCarthy, and Ted Thompson. "My experience here with the Green Bay Packers has been nothing but positive. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity that Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson have blessed me with. I have a peace about the productivity that I helped bring forward in all of the fine young men that have been entrusted to me these past five years. I am most proud of all their accomplishments and the fine young men they've become in this league."
Greene is a finalist for the 2014 class for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The New York Giants have announced they will hire the Packers quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo as their next offensive coordinator. McAdoo spent the past two seasons as the Packers quarterbacks coach. Prior to that position, McAdoo was the Packers tight ends coach for six seasons.

The Packers had only one representative in Hawaii for the 2014 Pro Bowl. Eddie Lacy, the NFL's Rookie of the Year, represented the Packers as a member of Team Sanders in the Pro Bowl. In an attempt to make the Pro Bowl more exciting, the NFL eliminated conference teams and created a Pro Bowl draft lead by two captains, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders.
Eddie Lacy made his first appearance in the Pro Bowl mid-way through the third quarter and finished the game as the running back for Team Sanders. Lacy rushed for 14 yards on seven carries. Lacy also caught one pass for 9 yards.
On December 28th, the NFL released the list of participates in the Pro Bowl. At that time, the Packers did not have any players representing the team in the Pro Bowl. However, on January 15th, it was announced that Lacy would replace Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson as an injury replacement.
In the end, Team Rice edged Team Sanders 22-21 in a defensive battle.

49ers knock Packers out of playoffs again

For the second consecutive season, the San Francisco 49ers have knocked the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs.
The Packers started extremely slow in this football game. The Packers started the game with three consecutive 3-and-outs and managed only six yards of offense in the first quarter. Give credit to the 49ers, the offense was so out of rhythm, they did not even complete a pass in the first quarter. The last time that happened to the Packers was in 2004. Despite the struggles, the Packers only trailed the 49ers at the conclusion of first quarter by a pair of Phil Dawson field goals. The 49ers moved the ball well against the Packers defense. However, the Packers, who are famous for their 'Bend-Don't-Break' defense, didn't break in the red zone and held the 49ers out of the end zone.
Early in the second quarter, Colin Kaepernick had the 49ers moving the ball again seeking for an early dagger in the Packers. On a second and seven from the Packers 29-yard line, Tramon Williams intercepted Kaepernick on a pass intended for Vernon Davis. The turnover was crucial as it fired up the crowd and the Packers offense. Aaron Rodgers, with the help of Eddie Lacy, dinked and dunked the Packers down the field for a 14-play drive ending with a Jordy Nelson touchdown. Thanks to the defense not breaking in the first quarter, the Packers somehow had the lead 7-6.
The 49ers responded quickly. Frank Gore found the end zone capping a 5-play drive for the 49ers giving them the lead right back 13-7. Kaepernick gashed the Packers defense for a 42-yard rush and brought back nightmares of last year's playoff game in San Francisco. Rodgers lead the Packers right down the field again, but the drive stalled inside the red zone and they settled for a Mason Crosby field goal cutting the 49ers lead at halftime to 13-10.
The third quarter was a defensive battle in the trenches. Neither offense could find a rhythm. The 49ers and Packers combined for a total of five punts in the third quarter.
The Packers opened the fourth quarter finding the end zone. John Kuhn pounded it in from 1-yard out to complete a 12-play drive giving the Packers the 17-13 lead. The drive also consisted of an unbelievable fourth down conversion as Rodgers escaped a sack and found Randall Cobb. Once again, the 49ers responded quickly. This time, the 49ers only needed four plays to get into the end zone to recapture the lead 20-17. Twice in this football game, the Packers took the lead, but gave it up minutes later. The Packers went on another long drive. The Packers had a first and goal from the 9-yard line. Sadly, just like the regular season, they could not find a way to get into the end zone. A Crosby field goal tied the game with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
The Packers never got the ball back. The defense could not find a way to get off the field. A third and ten, Kaepernick found Michael Crabtree for seventeen yards. A critical third and eight, Kaepernick escaped the pocket and rushed for eleven yards and another first down. A third and three to preserve time and give Aaron Rodgers a chance, ended with a Frank Gore 3-yard run. 49ers kicker Phil Dawson hit a 33-yard field goal as time expired and the Packers season was over.
The Packers finish the season 8-8-1.
Aaron Rodgers finished the day 17/26 for 177 yards and a touchdown. 177 passing yards is the lowest postseason total for Rodgers in his career. Eddie Lacy rushed for 81 yards on 21 carries in his first playoff game in his career. Jordy Nelson led the team in receiving with seven receptions for 62 yards and touchdown. Colin Kaepernick played well again against the Packers passing for 227 yards and a touchdown. Kaepernick hurt the Packers on the ground again rushing for 98 yards. Frank Gore rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown. Michael Crabtree had another big game against the Packers hauling in eight balls for 125 yards.
The 'Frozen Tundra' lived up to its name for this postseason matchup. Kickoff weather conditions at Lambeau Field were a balmy 5 degrees with a wind chill of negative 10 degrees. With the temperature dropping slowly throughout the game, both teams were playing in one of the coldest games in NFL history.
I'm very proud of this football team. This team easily could have given up weeks ago with injuries left and right. But they didn't. And kept fighting. Incredible resilient team. I love that this team never gave up. They never lost hope, even when most people did. We got to witness the rise of a star in Eddie Lacy. We got to witness the magical comebacks by Matt Flynn. We got to witness the comeback from Aaron Rodgers and the remarkable victory for the NFC North Championship. A lot of people believed the Packers were going to lose to the 49ers because they were on 'borrowed time' anyways. I have to tell you folks, despite the 8-8-1 record, despite the long list of injuries, the Packers were right there. A play or two different in this ballgame and the Packers are moving on.
A very disturbing note: the Packers started their playoff history at Lambeau Field 13-0. Since then, the Packers have suffered playoff home losses to the Falcons, Vikings, 49ers, and Giants twice. The Packers have lost five of their last eight playoff games at Lambeau Field. All-time the Packers are 16-5 on the 'Frozen Tundra' during the playoffs. Have the Packers lost their Lambeau Field intimidation advantage? Sure seems that way. No one is afraid of coming to Green Bay in January anymore. And that is very alarming.
The Packers will be faced with a lot of decisions in the offseason. Will Dom Capers be back as defensive coordinator? Will the Packers address personnel depth at the linebacker and safety position? Which free agents will the Packers bring back: B.J. Raji, Johnny Jolly, C.J. Wilson, Sam Shields, Mike Neal, Ryan Pickett, James Jones, James Starks, Jermichael Finley, Andrew Quarless, John Kuhn, Evan Dietrich-Smith? Will Ted Thompson sign any outside free agents?
In order for the Packers to return to the Super Bowl, they once again, have to address the defense in the offseason. This will mark the third straight offseason the Packers have to address defensive woes. This team could go so far if the Packers actually had a decent defense.

For the second consecutive season, the San Francisco 49ers have knocked the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs.
The Packers started extremely slow in this football game. The Packers started the game with three consecutive 3-and-outs and managed only six yards of offense in the first quarter. Give credit to the 49ers, the offense was so out of rhythm, they did not even complete a pass in the first quarter. The last time that happened to the Packers was in 2004. Despite the struggles, the Packers only trailed the 49ers at the conclusion of first quarter by a pair of Phil Dawson field goals. The 49ers moved the ball well against the Packers defense. However, the Packers, who are famous for their 'Bend-Don't-Break' defense, didn't break in the red zone and held the 49ers out of the end zone.

The 49ers responded quickly. Frank Gore found the end zone capping a 5-play drive for the 49ers giving them the lead right back 13-7. Kaepernick gashed the Packers defense for a 42-yard rush and brought back nightmares of last year's playoff game in San Francisco. Rodgers lead the Packers right down the field again, but the drive stalled inside the red zone and they settled for a Mason Crosby field goal cutting the 49ers lead at halftime to 13-10.
The third quarter was a defensive battle in the trenches. Neither offense could find a rhythm. The 49ers and Packers combined for a total of five punts in the third quarter.
The Packers opened the fourth quarter finding the end zone. John Kuhn pounded it in from 1-yard out to complete a 12-play drive giving the Packers the 17-13 lead. The drive also consisted of an unbelievable fourth down conversion as Rodgers escaped a sack and found Randall Cobb. Once again, the 49ers responded quickly. This time, the 49ers only needed four plays to get into the end zone to recapture the lead 20-17. Twice in this football game, the Packers took the lead, but gave it up minutes later. The Packers went on another long drive. The Packers had a first and goal from the 9-yard line. Sadly, just like the regular season, they could not find a way to get into the end zone. A Crosby field goal tied the game with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

The Packers finish the season 8-8-1.
Aaron Rodgers finished the day 17/26 for 177 yards and a touchdown. 177 passing yards is the lowest postseason total for Rodgers in his career. Eddie Lacy rushed for 81 yards on 21 carries in his first playoff game in his career. Jordy Nelson led the team in receiving with seven receptions for 62 yards and touchdown. Colin Kaepernick played well again against the Packers passing for 227 yards and a touchdown. Kaepernick hurt the Packers on the ground again rushing for 98 yards. Frank Gore rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown. Michael Crabtree had another big game against the Packers hauling in eight balls for 125 yards.

The Green Bay Packers are headed to the postseason as the 2013 NFC North Champions thanks to the heroic return to the field from Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb.
He's back. Aaron Rodgers returned to the field for the first time since breaking his collarbone Week 9 against the Chicago Bears. Rodgers returned to face the team that knocked him out with the NFC North Division title on the line. Rodgers carved up the Bears defense on the Packers opening possession, however, a rare Rodgers red zone interception stalled the drive inside the five yard line. Jay Cutler and the Bears took advantage driving the field and ending the drive with a Cutler touchdown pass to Matt Forte. Just like the first drive, Rodgers carved up the Bears defense on the Packers second possession of the game, however, a pass thrown behind Jordy Nelson was deflected by Nelson and intercepted at the Bears 17-yard line. Luckily, the defense forced a three and out to save Rodgers and the offense.
After a Mason Crosby field goal to cut the Bears lead to 7-3, the Packers scored a touchdown on one of the most bizarre plays you will ever see. On first and ten from the Bears 17-yard line, Rodgers' arm was hit by Julius Peppers and he fumbled the football forward. The ball went forward and appeared it was an incomplete pass. However, the referee never blew the whistle to end the play. Jarrett Boykin picked up the ball lying on the ground and walked into the end zone for the touchdown. The Packers led 10-7.
The next Bears possession lasted four plays and ended with an Alshon Jeffrey fumble recovered by Morgan Burnett. The Packers moved the ball inside the Bears 10-yard line, but were forced to settle with a Crosby field goal to take a 13-7 lead into halftime.
After a Green Bay three and out to start the second half, the Bears feed Matt Forte on five consecutive plays to find the end zone giving the Bears a 14-13 lead. Green Bay responded on the next drive by feeding Eddie Lacy and James Starks and finished the drive off with Rodgers connecting with Randall Cobb for a 7-yard touchdown giving the Packers a 20-14 lead. The Bears answered the Packers touchdown with a quick one of their own after Forte punched it in from the 1-yard line after a 67-yard reception by Alshon Jeffrey giving the Bears the lead again 21-20.

Aaron Rodgers constructed a masterful comeback game-winning drive. A drive consisting of three fourth down conversions. The first, a fourth and inches, converted by John Kuhn. The second, a fourth and one, converted on a back shoulder throw to Jordy Nelson. And the third, a fourth and eight, a 48-yard touchdown throw to Randall Cobb with :38 seconds remaining. The touchdown toss was the 2013 NFC North Championship dagger! The Bears had some time remaining, but the game ended on a Sam Shields interception of Jay Cutler.
With everything this Packers team has been through this season: the injuries, Rodgers hurt, the defensive struggles; the Packers are NFC North Division Champions. This team is truly resilient. This team never gives up. And this team is going to the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
The Packers will host the San Francisco 49ers at Lambeau Field for the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Steelers put damper on Packers playoff hopes

Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers put a damper on the Packers playoff hopes defeating Green Bay at snowy Lambeau Field. In a rematch of Super Bowl 45, the Packers and Steelers would play a wild one.
The path was set. Defeat the Steelers and beat the Chicago Bears in Week 17 and the Packers would be crowned 2013 NFC North champions. Matt Flynn and the Packers would strike first with a back shoulder touchdown to Jarrett Boykin. The Steelers would respond with a strike of their own tying the 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Unlike the previous two games, the Packers did not get off to a slow start. In the second quarter, Eddie Lacy continued his 'Rookie of the Year' campaign with a 14-yard helicopter dive-into-the-end-zone touchdown. Lacy would also, later in the game, pass John Brockington to set a Packers franchise record for the most rushing yards in a rookie season. Lacy already holds the record for most rushing touchdowns as a rookie and added to his record with a pair touchdowns against the Steelers.
After the Packers took a 14-10 lead into the locker room, the Steelers opened the second half with a six play touchdown drive that included a successful conversion of a fake punt. The next sequence was once of the craziest I've ever seen. After a Tim Masthay punt downed at the 2-yard line, the Steelers Le'veon Bell coughed the ball up on the 3-yard line and Tramon Williams recovered to put Green Bay in business. Bell was ruled down by contact, but the play was reviewed and overturned. The Steelers defense kept the Packers out of the end zone and blocked Mason Crosby's field goal attempt, however, as the ball was rolling on the ground, a Steeler batted the ball forward in an attempt to keep it from going out of bounds. The officials in game ruled the bat of the ball occurred without a change in possession, therefore was a penalty on Pittsburgh and an automatic first down for Green Bay. The ruling was incorrect on the field as a change in possession did occur as a Steeler did pickup the ball prior to the ball being batted. With a changed in possession, the penalty would have been half the distance to the goal and a first down for Pittsburgh. Mike Tomlin, head coach for the Steelers, tried to challenge the possession change, however, that is not a reviewable play. Nevertheless, Green Bay got the football after a block field goal at the 2-yard line. And then Eddie Lacy pounded it into the end zone giving Green Bay the 21-17 lead. An absolute crazy sequence of plays and rulings all benefitting the Packers.
To add to the craziness of this game, the Steelers preceded to drive the field again resulting in another touchdown giving the Steelers the 24-21 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Micah Hyde returned the kickoff 39 yards to the 40-yard line. On the Packers first play from scrimmage, they ran a run pass option. Flynn elected to pass the bubble screen to Jarrett Boykin, however, Andrew Quarless ran into Flynn as he was throwing the football causing him to throw a floating duck. The pass was intercepted by Pittsburgh's Cortez Allen and returned 40-yards for the touchdown giving the Steelers the 31-21 lead late in the third quarter.
The Packers did not give up. After a Mason Crosby field goal, the Packers tied the game with just over seven minutes left with a John Kuhn two-yard touchdown run. And with the game tied, the Packers had an opportunity to win the game with three minutes left. On a third and eight from the Green Bay 10-yard line, Flynn attempted to rush for the first down. The defense held the Steelers to a three and out, however, Nick Perry went offside on the field goal attempt on fourth and three giving the Steelers a first down. Micah Hyde gave the Packers new life with a 70-yard kickoff return to the Pittsburgh 31-yard line. Flynn passed the offense to the Pittsburgh 1-yard line with the clock running at 20-seconds. At this point, Don Barclay committed a false start. Because Green Bay had zero timeouts, the Packers were accessed a 5-yard penalty and a 10-second run off. Another factor, the clock began ticking on the officials signal. The Packers did not snap the ball until 5-seconds remained. Flynn's pass to Boykin was incomplete and the game was over.
Poor clock management on the final drive, horrific special teams all day long, and turnovers cost the Packers in this football game. The season could be over depending on the result of the Bears vs Eagles game on Sunday Night Football.
The defense for the Packers was holding up against the Steelers despite so many injuries. Some bad news, Clay Matthews sacked Roethlisberger in the second quarter and came up grimacing. Matthews was holding his thumb that he injured back in Week 5 and missed four games. Matthews went to the locker room and did not return. Eddie Lacy was also was hurt in this matchup. Lacy re-aggravated his sprained ankle and left the game in the third quarter and did not return.
Matt Flynn finished the day with 232 passing yards including a touchdown and an interception. Eddie Lacy rushed for 84 yards and added two rushing touchdowns. James Jones led the team in receiving with nine catches for 84 yards. Ben Roethlisberger only threw for 167 yards, but had two touchdowns and threw an interception (A.J. Hawk). Rookie running back Le'veon Bell dashed the Packers defense for 124 yards and a touchdown. And Antonio Brown led the Steelers receiving with 105 yards on six receptions.
There was a lot of discussion during the week that Aaron Rodgers would make his return from his broken collarbone, but Rodgers has still not been medically cleared to play football.
UPDATED: The Chicago Bears have lost on Sunday Night Football vs the Philadelphia Eagles. This means the Week 17 matchup between the Packers and the Bears will be for the NFC North division crown.

Matt Flynn finished the day with 232 passing yards including a touchdown and an interception. Eddie Lacy rushed for 84 yards and added two rushing touchdowns. James Jones led the team in receiving with nine catches for 84 yards. Ben Roethlisberger only threw for 167 yards, but had two touchdowns and threw an interception (A.J. Hawk). Rookie running back Le'veon Bell dashed the Packers defense for 124 yards and a touchdown. And Antonio Brown led the Steelers receiving with 105 yards on six receptions.
There was a lot of discussion during the week that Aaron Rodgers would make his return from his broken collarbone, but Rodgers has still not been medically cleared to play football.
UPDATED: The Chicago Bears have lost on Sunday Night Football vs the Philadelphia Eagles. This means the Week 17 matchup between the Packers and the Bears will be for the NFC North division crown.

The Packers shocked the world with a 23-point second half comeback victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Texas matching a record for the largest comeback in franchise history.
The first half was a complete disaster for the Packers. The Cowboys absolutely embarrassed the Packers in the first half of play. DeMarco Murray was running all over the defense. Tony Romo was carving up the secondary. The Packers went into the locker room trailing 26-3 with the bus starting to warm up for the trip back up north to Green Bay.
The Packers mounted a second half comeback that tied a franchise record set in 1982. How did they do it? The Packers had six possessions in the second half and scored a touchdown on five of them with the sixth possession ending in the victory formation.
The Packers opened up the second half with a four-play drive thanks to a 60-yard run by Eddie Lacy. From that point forward, the Packers kept gaining momentum as the comeback began. A huge difference in the second half was the quarterback play from Matt Flynn. Part of this success was due to better play calling by Mike McCarthy. You could notice as the second half continued the confidence in this football team. It appeared as they were reborn. They showed life.
The defense was shredded by Tony Romo and company in the first half. However, in the second half, they came to play. The defense sacked Romo three times in the ballgame (Daniels, Neal, Matthews/D. Jones). Most importantly, the Packers caused turnovers. The Cowboys had five possessions in the second half: field goal, punt, touchdown, interception, interception. Tony Romo is known for throwing late game interceptions; and boy did he live up to that reputation.
With the Packers trailing 36-31 with under three minutes to play, all the Cowboys had to do was run the ball. DeMarco Murray had dashed the Packers for 7.4 yards per carry. However, Romo checked from a run to a pass and threw an intercepted to Sam Shields at midfield. The play sparked the Packers sideline. Flynn led the Packers 50 yards as Eddie Lacy capped the drive diving into the end zone to give the Packers the lead for the first time with a minute and a half remaining in the ball game. In the Cowboys final drive, Romo did it again as he was intercepted by Tramon Williams to seal the epic comeback. The interception was ruled incomplete in the field, but a booth review overturned the call in the Packers favor.
Matt Flynn finished the day with 299 passing yards, four touchdown, and one interception. Jarrett Boykin had a nice day hauling in six balls for 83 yards. Andrew Quarless continued his excellent play catching six passes for 66 yards including one touchdown.
This Packers victory today, in my opinion, is one of the best Packers victories I've ever watched in my lifetime, excluding Super Bowl 31 and 45. This game was unreal. This team never gave up, even when everyone expected them to do so. I'm very proud of this team. This victory absolutely sparked this football team. Could this win spark a playoff run? Many players after the game said this win felt like they won the Super Bowl. Maybe this win can be the beginning of something special. And with rumors of Aaron Rodgers returning next week... this team could become dangerous.
Congratulations to Eddie Lacy as he passed the 1,000 rushing yard mark in his rookie season with his 131 rushing yards today. Lacy is continuing his fabulous rookie year as he has 1,028 rushing yards in just twelve games. Lacy in closing in on the Packers franchise rookie record of 1,105 rushing yards set by John Brockington in 1971. Lacy already holds the record for most rushing touchdowns as a rookie and added to his record on Sunday with a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Lacy has been a tremendous bright spot for the Packers this season. An absolute steal in the NFL draft, in my opinion.

The Packers finally got back into the win column with a second half comeback victory over the lowly Atlanta Falcons led by Matt Flynn, Eddie Lacy, and the defense.
This football game started the same way the previous four games did for the Packers; the offense was non-existent and the defense was pathetic. The Packers, led by Matt Flynn, scored a touchdown on their first possession thanks to a drive saving defensive penalty on a unsuccessful third down play. Eddie Lacy finished the drive off with a 1-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter. Lacy continues to shine despite not much offensive line blocking and average quarterback play. From this point forward, the Falcons controlled the remainder of the first half. Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan connected with Drew Davis and Tony Gonzalez early in the second quarter to give the Falcons the lead. With the Packers driving for some points just before halftime and trailing 14-10, Flynn became the subject of one of the weirdest interceptions. A short pass from Flynn to John Kuhn was deflected, kicked, and intercepted by Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon and returned 71 yards for a touchdown. The play was weird as it appeared the ball hit the ground, but replay showed otherwise. A loud roar of boos came down on the Packers as they exited the field for halftime.
The Packers appeared to be a different team in the second half. And it started with the defense. After a couple of Mason Crosby field goals, the Packers forced a Matt Ryan fumble deep in Falcons territory. The Packers capitalized with a Andrew Quarless touchdown from Matt Flynn that turned out to be the decisive victorious score. The defense shut down the Falcons on their final two drives with an opportunity to take the lead. Jarrett Bush finished off the Falcons by intercepting Matt Ryan with seconds remaining to seal the victory.

The rookie is closing in on a 1,000 yard rushing year (887 rushing yards). Jordy Nelson had a nice day catching four balls for 85 yards. And Andrew Quarless had a fine day with six receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Lambeau Field lived up to one of its nicknames on this Sunday afternoon as the tundra was frozen. Game time conditions included temperatures in the teens, wind chills in the negatives, and snow showers.
With the Detroit Lions losing to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Packers have moved to within a half game of first place in the NFC North with three games remaining.
Congratulations to Dave Robinson as he was honored at halftime for his enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Robinson received his Hall of Fame ring and had his name unveiled in the bowl of Lambeau Field.
