Packers Offseason Notes: 2015 Edition

The Packers 2015 offseason began after the loss in epic collapse fashion to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship game in Seattle. This blog post will be updated to note the Packers offseason moves as they become available.

UPDATE: (02/26/2015)

The Packers released 2006 first round draft pick A.J. Hawk after nine seasons with the team.  Hawk leaves the Packers as the franchise's career tackles leader with 1,118.  Hawk earned one trip to the Pro Bowl in 2010.

UPDATE: (02/16/2015)

Reports have confirmed tweets sent out by Packers tight end Brandon Bostick that his time with the team has come to an end.
Brandon Bostick's time in Green Bay will best be known for the mishandle of an onside kick attempt in the NFC Championship game against the Seattle Seahawks.  Bostick played a hand in a series of Packers' mistakes that led to an epic season-ending collapse. Bostick will not get an opportunity to redeem himself in Green Bay.

I wish Brandon the best of luck in the future. Brandon made a mistake, but he owned up to it after the game.

UPDATE: (02/12/2015)

Head coach Mike McCarthy announced several coaching changes for the 2015 season:

  • Head coach Mike McCarthy is giving up his offensive play calling duties
  • Offensive coordinator Tom Clements has been promoted to associate head coach (offense) and will handle the play calling duties
  • Wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett has been promoted to offensive coordinator
  • Quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt will coach both quarterbacks and wide receivers
  • Ron Zook will take over the special-teams coordinator position recently vacated by the dismissed Shawn Slocum
  • Jason Simmons has been promoted to special-teams assistant
  • Jerry Montgomery, former Oklahoma defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator, has been hired as a defensive assistant
  • Mike Solari, former San Francisco 49ers offensive line coach, has been hired as the assistant offensive line coach
The biggest change of all is head coach Mike McCarthy giving up play calling that he has done since he was hired in 2006.  This is a big move for the organization.  A move that could propel to success in the future.  There is a tremendous amount of respect and trust in Tom Clements. This move will allow McCarthy to focus on more of the team preparation for offense, defense, and special teams.

The Packers had several selections to the 2015 Pro Bowl including the leading vote getter, Aaron Rodgers.  The Packers were five minutes away in the NFC Championship game from not having any players participate in the Pro Bowl.  However, an epic collapse lead to the likes of Clay Matthews, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, John Kuhn, Sam Shields, and Josh Sitton suiting up in Arizona with the remainder of the league's best.

The NFL continued the format of a Pro Bowl draft lead by two captains, Michael Irvin and Cris Carter.  Jordy Nelson, John Kuhn, Josh Sitton, and Sam Shields were drafted by Cris Carter for Team Carter.  Clay Matthews and Randall Cobb were drafted by Michael Irvin for Team Irvin.

Jordy Nelson had a nice game pulling in three receptions for 41 yards including a 21-yard touchdown.  John Kuhn had a nice showing with two rushes for 31 yards and a pair of receptions for 13 yards.  Randall Cobb caught only one pass for 9 yards.  Sam Shields recorded three tackles for the game.  And Clay Matthews recored two tackles for the matchup.

Aaron Rodgers did not play due to his calf injury.

Ultimately, Team Irvin came out on top 32-28 over Team Carter.

Packers 42 - Vikings 10

The Packers absolutely pummeled the Minnesota Vikings in a Week 5 Thursday Night Football matchup at Lambeau Field.

For the first time this season, the Packers scored first in a game after Aaron Rodgers connected with Randall Cobb for a 8-yard touchdown.  The catch is Cobb's sixth touchdown reception of the season through five games.  Aaron Rodgers extended the Packers lead on the next drive by throwing a 66-yard touchdown to the NFL's leading receiver, Jordy Nelson.

The defense came to play.  The Vikings committed three turnovers in the second quarter on three consecutive possessions.  The first, an interception by Julius Peppers returned 49-yards to the house.  With the interception, Peppers became the first player in NFL history to record one hundred sacks and ten interceptions.  The second turnover, Jamari Lattimore intercepted Christian Ponder's next pass attempt.  Rodgers made the Vikings pay after connecting with Davante Adams for another touchdown.  The touchdown was the first for the rookie wide receiver out of Fresno State.  The third turnover was a fumble by Matt Asiata forced by Morgan Burnett.  The Packers lead the Vikings 28-0 at halftime.

The Vikings were forced to rely on backup quarterback Christian Ponder as their rookie starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered a high ankle sprain 4 days earlier.  Ponder continued his poor play wearing a Vikings uniform as he fell to 1-5-1 against the Packers in his career.  Ponder was sacked six times in the game by Nick Perry (2), Mike Daniels (1 1/2), Letroy Guion (1 1/2), Julius Peppers (1/2), and AJ Hawk (1/2).

The third quarter wasn't much better for the Vikings.  This quarter, the Packers got running back Eddie Lacy rolling.  Lacy found the end zone twice in the quarter.  Lacy finished a nice night with 105 rushing yards on 13 carries.  This game was by far Lacy's best game of the young season.

The Packers replaced most of the starters in the fourth quarter, including Rodgers.

In the three quarters that Rodgers played, he passed for 156 yards on 12/17 passing and three touchdowns.  Rodgers threw his 200th touchdown pass of his career.  Rodgers is the 2nd fastest quarterback ever to reach 200 passing touchdowns (Dan Marino).  Jordy Nelson caught only one pass all night long.  That one pass, however, was a 66-yard touchdown.  Randall Cobb continued his trend of catching touchdowns as he added a touchdown reception along with three receptions for 34 yards.

The Packers get a mini bye week before they hit the road again next week in Miami.

Packers 38 - Bears 17

Aaron Rodgers told Packer Nation to R-E-L-A-X during the week in reference to the sluggish start to the season for the Packers.  With his performance on Sunday against the Bears, we should listen to Aaron a little more.

The Packers and Bears participated in a good ol' fashion shootout at Soldier Field.  For the second time in NFL history, a football game did not include any punts.  In the first half of play, Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler were running their offenses at will.  Back and forth both quarterbacks went.  Jay Cutler took the Bears opening drive of the game and capped it off with a touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall.  Rodgers responded quickly with a drive of his own finished off by Eddie Lacy finding the end zone.  Cutler took the Bears second drive down the field again, however, the Packers defense was able to make a stand and deny the end zone.  Robbie Gould finished the drive with a 23-yard field goal to give the Bears a 10-7 lead.  Rodgers went back to work on the Packers second drive and connected with Jordy Nelson in the end zone to give the Packers a 14-10 lead.  The Bears and Cutler responded with another long drive with Alshon Jeffrey finding the end zone to give the Bears the lead once again, 17-14.  Rodgers did his thing again and this time found Randall Cobb in the end zone to recapture the lead 21-17.  With one minute remaining in the first half, the Bears tried to add some extra points before halftime.  With no timeouts, Cutler passed to tight end Martellus Bennett who was stopped by Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on the 1-yard line.  The Bears came away with zero points.  This play was a huge momentum changer for the second half.

The Bears self destructed in the second half.  Jay Cutler threw two interceptions, a deflected pass caught by Clay Matthews and a pick by Sam Shields.  The Bears scored zero points in the second half.  The Bears committed penalties to extend Packers possessions.  The Bears were a completely different team after halftime.

Rodgers and the Packers offense added 17 points in the second half to beat the Bears 38-17.  The victory evens their season record at 2-2.  The win is also the 700th victory in Green Bay Packers history.  The Packers have become the second team in NFL history to reach 700 victories as a franchise (Chicago Bears).

Rodgers finished the day 22/28 for 302 passing yards and four touchdowns.  Eddie Lacy had another slow day at the office with 48 rushing yards on 17 carries, however, Lacy did find the end zone.  Randall Cobb had another big day in Chicago hauling in seven passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns.  Jordy Nelson continued his stellar year with ten catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

Although the Packers defense shut out the Bears along with forcing two interceptions in the second half, the defense allowed 496 total yards.  That is a massive amount of yards.  The Bears rushed for 235 yards.  On the outside, it appears the defense did a good job.  But in reality, the difference in this game was the destruction of the Bears on offense in the second half.

Nonetheless, a Packers victory.
